What changes have been made under the current circumstances around COVID-19?
Companies are eligible to apply for a 3 month extension period to file their company accounts at Companies House during COVID-19.
When is the best time to apply?
If you are unable to submit your accounts at Companies House before the deadline due to COVID-19, then apply now.
What if the accounts are already late being filed at Companies House?
The automatic late filing penalty will apply in this case. Companies House have very little discretion to not collect the penalty so it’s best to apply before you pass the deadline if you think you’re not going to make it.
If you appeal against the automatic penalty citing unforeseen poor health and/or due to COVID-19, Companies House will deal with it on a case by case basis.
What if a company has already extended their filing deadline or shortened their accounting period? Will they be eligible for this extension?
Companies may be ineligible in these cases.
What if the accounts are late after the 3 months extension?
There will be an automatic late filing penalty issued.

What information do you need to apply for the extension?
You’ll need your company number, email address, reason for apply for an extension and any documents which may support your application (optional).
How long will it take to review the application?
Within 5 days. Companies House will contact you by email to confirm whether your application is successful or not. They’ll also contact you if they require more information. If the application is based on issues around COVID-19, the extension will be automatically and immediately granted.
